Pleasure Craft Safety Check (PCSC)

Unit 8 members took part in a Safety and Fundraising afternoon at the Ladner Yacht Club on May 29th, with demonstrations of recovering people from the water, hot oxygen re-warming, VHF radio tips, and familiarization with our fast-response-craft (see the Gallery for pics). The Unit also participated in the Ladner MayDays parade on May 30th, handing out Safe Boating Guides and Bobby the Safety Boat colouring books, while walking the parade route with kids wearing PFDs riding in our fast-response-craft (see the Gallery for pics).

A Pleasure Craft Safety Check is a FREE service provided by the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary to assist you, the owner/operator of a small craft (up to 78’ or 24m), in maintaining your vessel’s safety equipment at standards acceptable to the marine environment.

A trained member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will board your vessel, at your invitation, and conduct a thorough check of all the safety equipment required to be carried on board according to the Canada Shipping Act, Small Vessel Regulations and Collision Regulations. The Check includes making sure the equipment is present and in good working condition. As well a check of optional safety and navigational equipment will be carried out. The member will also discuss general safety awareness and safe boating practices.

A Pleasure Craft Safety Check can take from 15 to 30 minutes for a small vessel and from 30 minutes to one hour for a larger vessel, depending on the amount and condition of equipment on board, and your interest in safety.

Upon successful completion of the Check, a decal will be issued, which should be displayed on the vessel. Some boaters worry that they will not successfully complete the Check. You should not be concerned about this. The Member will offer suggestions that can assist you in remedying any deficiencies.

THE INFORMATION OBTAINED DURING A PLEASURE CRAFT SAFETY CHECK WILL NOT BE FORWARDED TO ANY ENFORCEMENT AGENCY.

The objective of the Pleasure Craft Safety Check program is to advise and improve your safety and enjoyment while on the water. Your co-operation in having a Pleasure Craft Safety Check is much appreciated. It shows that you are a responsible boater who cares for those on board your vessel.

A Pleasure Craft Safety Check is not mandatory or required by law. However the….LAW REQUIRES CARRIAGE OF THE PRESCRIBED SAFETY EQUIPMENT.

For a list of the equipment required to be carried on board, pick up a copy of Transport Canada's Safe Boating Guide. It is available at most marine retail outlets or by calling the Transport Canada's Office of Boating Safety at (604) 666-0146 Vancouver or (250) 480-2792 Victoria. An on-line version is available by following this link.

Preparing for A Pleasure Craft Safety Check

Many boaters ask how they can prepare their vessels for a Pleasure Craft Safety Check. Very little preparation is required as the Coast Guard Auxiliary Member conducting the check will want to see the vessel, as it would be in its normal operating state. Ensuring the safety equipment is in order will assist the Member while on board and save time for the owner. We've provided a checklist for you to use -
